Thread: Where can I get a certified copy of my passport?

  1. #1

Default Where can I get a certified copy of my passport?

My wife is applying for a spouse visa for the UK and I need to send the embassy in Tokyo my passport or a certified copy of it. Since I am flying back to the UK at the beginning of August I don't wish to leave my passport with the embassy in case they hold it for too long. Does anyone know where I can go to get a copy certified? I am in Nagoya.

I would assume by having the Japanese equivalent of a Notary Public certify it. Of course, looking that up in the phone book could be a challenge. Your wife could likely find one for you though.

A call to the embassy would likely be your first move.

Does Nagoya have a consulate in Nagoya? you could consider approaching them about getting it witnessed or go to the consulate in Osaka.

Where would the Nagoya embassy be, then?
I think it's true and that's good enough for me.

The consulate in Nagoya is closed.

Thanks for the advice. I have checked out the Osaka website again and they do offer the service http://www.uknow.or.jp/be_e/consular/other/notarial.htm

In London, right beside the British, obviously.

    You are so 1995.

The British Embassy in London closed its doors long ago, due to a critical shortage of British citizens actually living in London.

I believe there is an English Embassy in Edinburgh, though.

They speak both Scottish and British.

I am not sure which spelling they use, though.

I heard that English embassy also closed due to a glut of refugees trying to claim diplomatic impunity.

    All of them pizzed obviously...

There had been a scotch egg rally and some people had died.

I heard about that one too.

But only the kebabs on the lamp posts were there to bear witness to the horror.

    good luck

The last time I tried to get a certified copy of my passport, I contacted the local scrivenor and he told me to come to his office at 2:00 on thursday when a lawyer would be there. I said I didn't think a lawyer was necessary but I went anyway.

When I arrived I explained what I needed and the lawyer asked me a bunch of questions about what I needed the document for. I told him it was to open a bank account in another country (not Japan which was true) He sucked a lot of air and told me he wouldn't do it because there was a risk of someone laundering money or something and he didn't want to be held responsible.

I told him I didn't think he understood the notary system, even though Japan is a signatory country, and that I was not asking him to be a guarantor for a bank account which he seemed to be confusing it with. Then I left the office.

Later I looked up the US embassy services and found out they charge $55.00 for notary services for something that should be no charge. Hump!

I just waited a couple months till I went back to the US and walked into a bank there and got it in two minutes with no questions or charges.
