    Default CFA in Japan

    Hi,

I'm curious about the value of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification here in Japan. I've passed levels I and II, and will take III in June of 2004. Enrollment in the CFA program has exploded in Japan, so I assume employers here are taking a liking to it. Is this the case?

I thought I'd reignite this thread.

These days, it appears as if the CFA is a "must have" if one wants to work in investment banking.

A question to those who have passed all three levels of the CFA certification: would you say it has helped you in your investment decision-making processes?
I'm not interested in working in investment banking. I am a lone-wolf investor who likes to crunch large amounts of information and I wonder if the skills I'd learn thru taking the CFA exams will help me.

I would say CFA chartership is a very useful way to demonstrate you have the skills and commitment to work in security analysis/portfolio management or a number of other finance related careers. I estimate it took me 900 hours+ of independent study over three years to pass all three levels.

Now I have passed I feel it gives me a significant leg-up if I do ever need to change jobs - holding a chartership does demonstrate minimum competency at the very least, which can be augmented with your work track record as applicable.

You can easily learn the skills and techniques taught in the CFA outside of the progam, and a whole lot more besides.... however there are few (if any) qualifications as rigorous as the CFA to demonstrate you have (or at least had?!) the knowledge to any employer or client.
