Default dropping off hire car in different location

Is it ok in Japan to hire a car in one place and drop it off somewhere else? Someone said it may not be possible for different prefectures but not sure if that's BS.

    Thanks

I've done it, and it wasn't a problem at all. I drove from Shikoku to Kobe and the rental company charged me an extra 10,000 yen (i think... it was 2 years ago now).

as said above, you should confirm with the rental agency.

    happy driving!

What the *** are you talking about, SMALL handling charge?! Toyota's oh-so-convenient one way system calculates a mere 17,850Y for North of Tokyo to Nagoya.
And assuming that most people get a rental passenger car, say 8,000Y, to transport some-one/-thing from A to B and not keeping the car for two weeks, this is unbelievable. Way to go, Toyota!!

anybody knows a way around this?

Yeah i found exactly the same thing. One-way rental in Japan is stupidly expensive. Cheaper/easier to Just drive there and back (nagoya isnt too far), and then shinkansen or bus it back on your own. Either that or get whatever you need sent via a removals company. Chances are you are going to pay an extra 10,000+ on tolls and petrol anyway

hey **** for brains, don't shoot the messenger. i don't set toyota's policies. around 3-4 years ago it cost me 2,000 yen extra for a one-way across 3 prefectures, i consider that a small charge.

contact toyota for up-to-date prices - that post was more than 3 years ago, times change, service charges change...

Nippon Rent a Car looks even more pricey:

Tokyo to Nagoya looks like it would be an additional 22,050 for a one-way. I guess as not many people do one-way rentals, you're basically paying for someone to drive the car back to where it belongs after you're done with it (including toll fees).

That's just silly...and can cost you more. unless you inform the company beforehand about your plan.

Apologies to tryfan. Was very upset last night when figured out the silly extra charges (which I still think are complete nonsense). Sorry mate.
Tokyo_dom is probably right, I should rather contact pakmail or similar to get the stuff transported and follow by train, as I do not need to get back to Kanto, and counting tolls & petrol for the rental car, takkyuubingin' it can't be that much.

    cheers
