Thread: Plugging things in...?

    Default Plugging things in...?

Last time I was in Japan, I had problems with an electric device I used...it kept blowing fuses. I also had a friend whose laptop got fried.
How can I prevent my electric stuff from being destroyed?
Should I just bring a typical surge protector or what?

Just what kind of electrical devices are we talking about here?
Corn on my pizza-pie ... no, no, no!

Does this topic belong in a forum about the forum itself?
I think it's true and that's good enough for me.

Sorry, I thought Forum Forum meant general topics...

As for what kind of device, i'm mainly concerned about laptops, since i'll bring one this time...
    Thanks for any help.

Nowadays, all laptops should be fine. Check your adapter for the range of volts it will accept. For example, I'm good from 100 - 240v--yours should be the same ( I guess).

    hmm, i'm still worried.

i left japan last october, so it wasn't long ago.

the power supply that kept blowing fuses was about the same as you say (maybe 110-220volt), it had an AC adaptor...basically just changes AC to DC.
but my friend's fried laptop is what worries me...no fuses in them things.

i've read that east & west coast japan are different, like 50 & 60 hertz.

maybe i'll ask someone at circuit city, unless anyone else knows something...?

The hertz thing should be both--mine is. Are you absolutely sure it was the power supply that fried your friends computer? Sounds odd unless your friend was in some really old place with faulty wiring. Japan's volts are less than the States.

err, no, the power supply was for other stuff, not part of the laptop.

my friend was US army & staying at that heavily-guarded barracks in roppongi, he wasn't sure why it fried.

but my power supply that kept blowing fuses was run at a j-flat in yokohama....the same thing happened in europe..(!)

What do you mean by "blowing fuses?" The breaker switches kept getting tripped? That would mean you were using too much juice for the amps on your box. Usually 40 is fine, but if you have a lot of electrical appliances and a 200 aircon going at the same time, you'll need 60 (takes the electrical company about 10 minutes to make the upgrade for you).

i dunno, maybe zombies, but it's the only place i seen guarded by japanese w/shotguns.

Well, the term 'power supply' is misleading. It's not a power strip or surge protector. At the wall it's an AC adaptor, then a rheostat to control volts, with a screw-in fuse that costs like 30y at Tokyu Hands...but is a pain when it keeps frying. Sometimes it'd go an hour before blowing a fuse, then 2 in 2 minutes...The laptop's a whole other mystery...needless to say, nobody in the US can help me..

Well it is very simple Why nobody in the states can help you, because they would not know about Japan. All laptops are ok , just do a search in the computer forums.

Maybe the idiots have become more idiotic which may in turn cause there to be an illusion that there are infact more idiots.
