Overseas calls by internet

Has anyone set up their computer to make international calls via the internet? If so, can anyone can tell me if/how this can be done, and what sort of hardware and software is necessary. Thanks

I have been doing this for 3 years. When I first got here I used those calling cards, ya know, 3000 yen for 90 min. to Canada. 2hrs to the States. but it was a pain in ___ going to the payphone and if no one was home, frustration. Finally I got Net2phone and have been satisfied ever since. I believe it's net2phone.com and just download the dialpad from their site. 2 min. your done. It costs $25 US for around 4 hours of talk time to Canada. More time if you call the States. They have a secure site for payment with VISA or MC and I now I call all the time and it's great. You can opt for the automatic payment so when the total is less than 5 bucks, it automatically takes $25 from you card. I have had no problems with the payment schedule. Sometimes I spend it all in one month, sometimes it takes 3 months. Never a problem.

With respect to the calls, I would say 95% of the time the calls work great. Sometimes, because your bouncing off half a dozen satellites, the call has a sec. delay or is really fuzzy but then ya just call back later, no worries. Ya need to buy a good headset and that will make a huge difference. I was cheap at first and ended up buying a 2nd better set later on and that made the difference in sound quality. All in all, I have been happy.

There are a few other companies out there and I am sure they work just as well.

Do I need to hook up on line via a phone line, broadband, or cable? Does it matter?

Hi,
Here is another way that will not cost you anything except for the internet charge. Use voice conference via ICQ or yahoo messenger. In this case you and your called person will have to be online using a micro. a speaker or earphone, and the same chat software. Both ICQ and Yahoo messenger are free download software. I communicate this way to Vietnam and the U.S. with no trouble. connection quality is even better than using Yahoo BB calls.
