Default Cherry Blossom House - "Foreigners don't mind living in dirty conditions"

My wife, who works in the real estate business in Tokyo
Recently enlightened me on something the owner of a company "Cherry Blossom House" said.
(you can make the translation yourself)

The owner of Japans largest gaijin-apartment rental service was qouted saying something to the likes of:

"Our business has been able to survive through these difficult times because foreigners don't mind
living in dirty conditions. They move into our dirty apartments, and leave without cleaning them.
They don't mind living in such conditions - so this is how we have been able to manage to keep our costs down".

    What do you think ?
Should us dirty gaijin give this man our business - since that we don't in fact mind "living dirty"?

You can search this article yourself - if you can read Japanese.

In fact, on the Japanese version of their website where they try to attract potential land owners to become clients they stuff exactly like that. "It doesn't matter if your place is run down. Gaijin don't care."

The fact is though, regardless of the sketchy attitude of the people who run it, the actually places are hit or miss. I stayed with them a summer and it was fine. And in general their customer service people are legit.

But since my guess is that OP is a new account created just to blast this company, it doesn't really serve well to defend them.

It's not like the OP had a lot at stake.
I've heard some mildly unfavorable stories about that company, too, but seriously what's the point of the OP? Aren't tenants expected to do the cleaning by themselves? And if they don't, isn't it correct to assume that they don't mind living in the dirt?

Ah, a man with common sense.

Dirty is, what dirty does. First thing you do before living in a place is to give it, or pay someone to give it, a thourough rub down.

There are some filthy mofo's out there so......

Amusingly, I'm moving into a place under the Cherry Blossom emblem in mere hours. Suffice it to say if the room is dirty, I'll clean it.

(Additionally, for tenants who sign for the room without visiting it beforehand, the deposit agreement says something to the effect of "you can't complain for any reason.")

Actually, I think there was a Uni over here that posted something similar, was a while ago though. Same reasoning, didn't have the DNA matching threat.

How could semen cause a blockage? Did it impregnate something that is growing in the pipes? a C.H.U.D.?
I think it's true and that's good enough for me.

They might have confused it with pale looking stool.

    First impressions:
    1) Either the washer doubles as a dryer or the web site lied.
    2) There's a large, rather strange stain in the folding desk.
    3) No major concerns otherwise.

If the place said it had a dryer then I'd be very surprised. If it did then you should call and/or email them so that they explain it and/or correct their posting.

In fairness to this landlord, perhaps he simply meant that foreigners were willing to forego the silly ritualized cleaning that gets done before an apt is occupied There.
    Eschew obfuscation.

Barring the wallet-sized desk stain (which my girlfriend thinks might be from an ashtray?) and two suspicious-looking stains on the walls, the room itself is actually pretty spotless. As of this writing I firmly believe the included TV was made by a company that no longer exists, but ah well.

I have used this place in the past, and I would use them again without hesitation for a short term stay (maximum 3 months or so). If I was staying longer than that I would use them while I am finding proper accommodations. The rooms are easy to get, you don't have to jump through a ton of hoops and the minimum stay is 1 month. The price is acceptable for a furnished apartment with utilities included. Yeah the building won't be brand new and it may be a bit run down but the one I had was livable. After I took down the Dragonball Z poster from the bathroom door it was fine.

It don't most foreigners are as picky about cleaniness especially if the price is low. The place I might be moving into is old but I wouldn't consider it dirty. As long as I put in some new furniture as well as clean it every week it. It happens to be a two minute walk from the station and is in a nicer area than I currently live. The truth is a lot of foreigners live in areas that are undesirable to alot of japanese but they are cheap...so most foreigners don't care. The comment does make the person sound really stupid and racist but sadly there is some truth. I think people need to not take sh!t so seriously sometimes.

    Hmm.

I think the landlord sees gaijins as animals,
just like Basil Hall Chamberlain described a 100 years ago.

What the landlord misses is those 90% (or whatnot) of visitors that stays at hotels because they can afford it.

Seems what he/she's also missing is that the Cherry Blossom backpackers and inbetweeners are not too different from the Japanese equivalent abroad.

But no one expects everyone here to think that far. Island country, not traveling abroad and all those excuses. Google, books, whatnot, all viable ways of looking up things outside Japan, but, as a true Japanese...one should assume the worse of the heathens.
