Default How to stop Outlook Express reading HTML

I used to use english Eudora but switched to Outlook Express to get UNICODE working so I could read my Japanese mail. Eudora had an option "Don't download HTML graphics" so you could stop validating your address to those m**f***er spammers. But it seems Outlook Express can't do this, there's no way to preview the message without getting the html to download.

Does anyone know an alternative email client that can do Unicode properly and is more secure than Outlook Express? Or a way to turn off the loading of spam html in Outlook? Drives me nuts. I was happy with Eudora, it had the bonus that I could ignore all official Japanese mail from work ; )

Figured it out. Have to check "Read all messages in plain text". I was looking for an HTML option. Still looking for a better email client though...

There was also an interesting article on the register about this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23223.html

but it's a bit old and obviously out of date.

    Hi bluedog,

The outlook express is the best client at the moment if you know how to handle it. I guess you are receiving spam mail from xxx site or you may receive the mail that contains attachment (virus). You can over come with this using Tools->option->Security tab and check the box that says “Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus”.

This is very standard security option for normal user. If you know how to program I highly suggest you to buy the “Developing App, Using Outlook, CDO, Exchange and VB” from Addison-Wesley.

Time to time please check iana.org web site and try to find how to register yourself as spam protector (now is beta 1.34). You may earn 0.03 cent for per spam and 0.12 cent for virus.

It is not easy and many people attempt to con them but all off them banned or have face legal penalty in USA or around world. So you need to use a computer that iana can control remotely. They can ban you very quickly if you try to send some spam or virus mail to yourself just simply registering yourself such a site or group. You should also use full header to send back to iana.org for all your virus effected and spam mail.

I was received nearly 200-300 spam and virus mail daily in 2003. I earn nearly $3210 simply fighting back. This year since 1st January I received 4-5 mail per week. Well I earn money last year so it wasn’t that much important for this year and most of the spam that I am receiving goes in to my Bulk folder.
I nearly forget to mention that, you should also accept to use iana’s filtering in your outlook.

I hope this helps you, and may be you can earn some money for just doing right thing.

Good luck and happy mailing. Hope you can live without receiving annoying mail and viruses.

I AM AFRAID I AM VERY AFRAID......

If anyone's interested, Mozilla thunderbird gives you access to unicode, and other japanese encodings. You can even see the japanese fonts in the subject line (unlike OE, which only renders it correctly on viewing the message)

I had to switch from Eudora, went via OE, and then to Thunderbird. It seems ok. You can switch off HTML, and read and write japanese. If you are using it to send japanese mail though, you should set it to "Japanese" encoding instead of Unicode.

This info would've helped me. Hope it helps someone else.

jnash1, thanks for your input. I'm all for suing a spammer or two, but I'm not sure I have the energy for it. I checked the web site and it's interesting, but for now, I just want to kill all spam. What they are trying to do is cool though. Only when it costs a spammer money will they stop spamming. They take my time, I should be able to take their money.

I'm with you Bluedog. For years people were basically stuck using garbage like Eudora (sorry, but it is), or that virus/spam machine called Outlook Express. Finally, there is a real, viable alternative in the form of Thunderbird. It also has excellent spam filtering built-in. And it's 100% Open Source (read: free).
    You can download it here:

I'm with Bluedog and Datafly on this one.

Mozilla Thunderbird is nifty AND reads jp fonts, including in the subject line.

I also like the Junk Mail "training" feature.
