Has anyone purchased a calling card from callingcards.com? They seem to have a cheap option called "WORLD CALLS," but I want to make sure I'm not going to run into any problems calling the US from my Softbank phone.
Thanks!

Why not just use Skype? If you have an iPhone you can simply use Skype over 3G to make free (or $0.02/min) calls to the U.S., just like using it on your PC. If you don't have an iPhone, try Brastel.
I don't have an iPhone (Softbank's deal screws you over if your iPhone ever breaks).
I checked Brastel's site, but unless I looked at the rates chart incorrectly it appears to cost 27 cents per minute from Fukuoka to America which is WAY too expensive.
Anyone else?
Thanks!
It didn't sound that way when I talked with Softbank, but perhaps it is that easy. Either way, I don't really want an iPhone.
I don't have a landline, either, but even if I did 7.33 yen/min is still too expensive. The cards I made this topic about are only 2-3 yen/min.
I think you need to check that website again, the costs do NOT include a call to an access number, which for Japan is:
Tokyo, Japan 0(3)45802076
Tokyo, Japan 0(3)45903114
Toll-free, Japan 005 311 200 17 / 32.9¢ per min.
You first call the access number above, then use the service to get the low cost (¥2〜). The call to the access numbers above are charged seperately.
Check this note on callingcards.com
**NOTE: This is a local access product. Please verify with your phone company if the area codes listed are considered local and free.
The local numbers do not cover the entire country.**
The cost I previously quoted for Brastel includes the call to the access number.
OK, is there a cheaper option than Brastel if using a mobile phone?
With Brastel if calling from a mobile phone to a landline in America is costs 27yen per minute. That's outrageously high.
There has to be a better option.
No, this question has been asked many times here..... it goes like this, cheapest to most expensive:
Skype to skype: free ( I use Skype, please substitute VOIP if you don't)
Skype to landline: cheap
Calling card (Brastel or other) landline to landline: see above
Skype to mobile : more expensive, but doable
Calling card (Brastel or other) Mobile to anything: bendover
**forgot.. mobile to mobile~ take out a mortgage
If you insist on using a mobile for international calls, get used to the cost
This is one way an iPhone can pay for itself with Softbank's plan, install Skype, use the mobilepoint free wifi.
That said, I used to use Brastel from my mobile and didn't think it was so bad![]()

What is mobilepoint free wifi? Hotspots that allow free connections if using Softbank?
I think it's true and that's good enough for me.
Yes, available at some train stations and other places, including fine dining establishments like MacDonalds
Softbank website has the info...
Edit: softbank wifi http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/iphone_en/wifi/#bbmp

Calling USA @ 27 yen/min with Brastel way too high ???
That's less than a call within Japan for most cell plans ..... just don't get the complaint
Anyway, Verizon (Smart-Pit) is 17 yen/min - can get at Costo I think. But not as flexible as Brastel
Otherwise Comica (if you can buy the cards at half-price like I can and you can do through Yahoo auctions) works out at 22.5 yen/min with 35% off at weekends ( =15 yen/min) but 1st min only is 30% more
Yes, callingcards.com cards charge for local connection charge so v. prob. more expensive if calling from cell
