Those aren't genuine compliments about water boiling ability but rather chopstick skills caliber commentary.
Outside of work I answer chopstick-commentary by returning a spoon- or fork compliment. But at work I refrain from that, in most cases, since I'm going to see these people the following day.
Instead a simple "Thanks. (<-- notice period)" works like a politer version.
