Default Gifts from Canada for host in Osaka?

    Hi,

I'm going to be staying at my girlfriend's place (just outside Osaka city) during the holidays, and I'd like to bring a gift for her mother (father is AWOL), preferably something with a Canadian or Vancouver air to it. Ice Wine? Salmon? Rye? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

And no, I'm not giving maple syrup :b

Ice wine, granville island beer, granville island stuff, gassy jack stuff, whistler stuff, victoria stuff.

All above are places and things my wife, sister and mom wanted to see/buy while in vancouver.

    Gixx.

Definitely icewine. Get it at the liquor store rather the airport; not only is it cheaper but there should be a better selection, including smaller bottles.
With dad out of the picture, forget the rye. Also don't bother with the smoked salmon- Japanese tend to prefer the thinly sliced lox type smoked salmon, rather than the firm chunky Pacific coast kind.
Jams (or jellies, butters, sauces, teas etc) made from local fruit are great. Blueberry jam in particular is a guranteed hit.
A small coffee table book or postcard book of scenes from Vancouver and/or the Rocky Mountains.
Pacific coast Indian art. Apparently nothing says Canada better than a little soapstone sculpture of a bear holding a salmon...

I disagree about the salmon. I bought a few from Costco in Vancouver this summer and never have i had so many compliments on something I brought back. About $10 a box.

So far like everybody has stated, Icewine makes a great gift. And instead of going for the white, try the red.

You might also consider some maple syrup or Inuit art .

    Default Or, how about this?

What about Avril Lavigne wrapped in tinsel (and nothing else), preferably with an apple in her mouth, to stop her from whining, errr, I meant to say singing.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Surprised no one has mentioned a baggie of BC bud.

Can't see that going over well at the airport though.

Clearly the vast majority of Canucks on this forum are city slicks. As a juicehead, I have no particular objection to ice wine but coffee table books??? Better buy her a coffee table first!

No, the only gift that truly screams Canada is taxidermy. A mounted moosehead reeks class. But if you want a more feminine touch, a cutesy-wutesy wabbit might be just the thing. Or a chinook salmon always brightens up a room.

As for you potheads always bemoaning the lack of grass here, you really ought to get yourself connected. I got sh*t coming out my ___ and ears. Or maybe it's because I hang out with a lot of junkies...

Second the salmon. My Japanese employer brought me back some Canadian salmon from her trip - fantastic.

    Default Gifts for the family

My Mother-In-Law loves the Maple Cream Cookies from Thrifty's in Victoria. Last time she came over we bought 14 bags for her to give out to her friends!

But I would suggest giving something non-perishable. You want them to have something to remember long after you are gone (assuming you don't break her daughters heart !). Maybe some westcoast art. Roy Henry Vickers or maybe a cool coffee mug. Or you could go with some cool placemats or native looking mug coasters.
Sell crazy somewhere else, we're all stocked up here!
