Default Free or cheap WiFi places in Tokyo

    Hi,

I'm a telecommuting programmer and get tired from sitting at home all the time, I'd like to work from different locations/cafe etc. In Tokyo, what are your recommendations?

Unexpectedly, Japanese Starbucks don't let me use their sockets, and there is no WiFi. I tried going to public libraries, but the Internet there is stripped, they block even more sites than China in a district central library near my place!

I can't get E-Mobile because they have a 2 year contract and I'm only in Japan temporarily.

    Any suggestions?

PS: It was so much better in Hong Kong!

http://www.hotspot.ne.jp/en/ <-- "0033" service available in most subway stations, major JR Stations, Tully's and various other places, including the new Narita Express trains.

Or "mobilepoint" service available from various providers, with coverage at McDs, Doutor, etc. http://wireless.yahoo.co.jp/

Starbucks wouldn't let you use their outlets? I've used my computer in Starbucks all over Japan and plugged in every time. Looks like you got a cranky employee giving you ____.

    Nice link.

As for any wifi spot you find, be aware that stealing bits over the ether is probably a crime in Japan. And don't ever dare steal a microwatt of electricity. Don't even try to steal static electricity from the carpet.

    It's not allowed.

I asked in the forums earlier about FOn, but nobody seemed aware of it. In theory could provide wi-fi almost anywhere, but I am keen to hear from someone using it before I splash the cash on a FON router.
