Default Selling cigarettes for cheap after Oct 1

Would it be okay to buy a pack of cigarettes for 320yen before the 120yen price increase on October 1st and then sell it for e.g. 370yen after that date which profits both me and the person buying cigarettes of me? Obviously I'm not talking about a few packs.

Nope it would not be ok. It would be illegal and when they catch you they will throw you in prison, don't be stupid.

How do you know this for sure? I don't see anything wrong with it and am sure others have thought about it too.

Go ahead but presuming you are retail, not wholesale, 100 cartons will net you 50,000. Don't quit your day job or leave the institution that currently provides room and board and apparently internet access.

I'll go for 300 cartons and sell the whole lot at 400yen a pack around Christmas and New Years to those bars and izakayas that sell cigarettes over the counter. Make a nice 240,000yen on the side.

He'll also be competing with a bunch of Yaks who have the same idea. And if they catch him he'll be drinking his meals through a straw for the rest of his short life. have to remember the local lowlifes really hate wiseguys who don't belong to their exclusive club.

I was able to do this many years ago - but at that time I had the supply chain cornered and was selling to bars and the yaks. Good days those were…

Since you have nothing cornered - supply, nor captive customers - I doubt that you could sell them. More likely, whomever you try to sell them to would bring in the yaks and they would take them all off of you for free, unless you want broken bones.

Since you are into risky businesses – try drugs or rare earth metals, or your body – something that you can control at least one end of the transaction. Not that I recommend this of course….

Yes they are, but nobody likes a foreign wiseguy moving in on their turf.

You really do have an inaccurate view of the legal system, don't you? Second thread in which you've tried to scare someone with totally inaccurate information.

In jail over reselling some cigarettes? Yeah, right.

With that said...I personally do not think it's a good idea. At all.

How great! You should do it around the bars with hot women carrying little bra-trays. You could get 1,000 Y a pack!

We need more of that. Also sell Snickers bars and Reeses -- yum

let me know. i'll place an order for Menthols with that cool button u push to get a menthol hit

    yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh

    And the window has closed.

Anyway, you would have needed thousands of cartons to make any kind of real profit. Just read up on the East European black market cigarettes and you'll see how it's really done.

I got 325 cartons of mostly Marlboro, Seven Star and the cheaper Mild Seven. Now all I gotta do is wait a couple of months and sell the whole lot. Reselling them doesn't seem to be a crime and I'm not all that concerned about the 'yaks'. They can suck my ____! Seriously, you should see some of those chimpira. lolzzz

Tobacco is a government monopoly in Japan. The Jgov't takes their taxes plus an extra bit off the top from each pack that gets sold. So, when you start cutting the government out of what they consider to be theirs the penalties are far in excess of what the crime would actually entail.

I'm guessing you get up to the 13th izakaya before you either realize that nobody wants to buy your cigarettes with 0 margin, or the cops find you.

    Awesome idea.

You will regret not buying more than 325 cartons.

So, what is the crime again that he is suppose to be committing?
He buys a legal product and then tries to resell it for a profit.
As long as he pays income tax on his 'earnings', yeah right, he is in the clear.
Unless there is a legal limit of the amount of tobacco sold beyond which he needs a dealer's licence.
If so then he could be busted.
90% of the yaks are farking loudmouths who couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag.
The other 10% may skin you alive. Just a personal opinion, no facts were checked.
Japan is just an old folks home run by gangsters and obtuse bureaucrats.

all this talk about the yaks really makes me laugh. The "mafia" in Japan are a bunch of whiney pussies. This was confirmed once more in last two days spending time with them. OMG what a bunch of bloody whips those guys are. Pathetic...

the idea is good, but any bar, pub, restaurant, cafe owner has done it as well.
i you show up in 3-4 months saying you got cheap packs it may look suspicious (stolen?)...

anyway, let us know how to manage at the end.

    cheers for the entepreneur.
