Default Port forwarding problem with Yahoo BB

    Hello,

I have recently switched to Yahoo and I'm having some problems with their modem firewall setup.
I have two computers at home connected to the internet via hub plugged into the modem. I'd like to have certain ports open on both machines, but for some reason I can only make it work for one of them.

I logged into the modem at http://172.16.255.254/, typed in all the ports number I wanted open along with the internal IP of our first computer. This worked perfect, both PFPortchecker and PortDetective report them open. However, when I tried to create a set of rules for the second computer, I stumbled upon a problem. The modem setup does not allow me to type in the same WAN port number again in a new line, nor an IP range in the previous lines. Every attempt to configure port forwarding for the second computer results in an error like this:
    Screenshot
or similar errors, depending on the field I'm trying to mess with...

So basically, the machine using 192.168.3.1 gets open ports, the other one keeps getting closed and I have no other idea how to input any settings for it.

Anyone knows if it's possible to forward ports for two machines with Yahoo? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

So you have two computers sharing the same connection (which is what happens when you use a hub) if you had a router then you could do what you want. Get a router.

I'm pretty sure that's how port forwarding works. You forward a specific port to a specific internal IP. You need to configure the app on the second machine to use a different set of port numbers.

iago is correct. It's like trying to deliver one letter to two houses - it's just not going to work.

    At SteadyRollingMan:
I guess I could try that. I got a hub because that's what Yahoo support people told me I should do.
So basically, if I get a router, forwarding the ports to the router's ip address using the modem setup app should do it?

Well. I'm pretty sure I was able to do it this way with my previous ISP's modem setup and it worked just fine, the ports were open on both machines. And it also said ポート転送. But maybe it was only the modem's firewall settings or something, I don't know. Anyhow, right now I can't just configure it on the second machine using the same app because I'm accessing the modem, not my PC's firewall. If I access it from the second machine, I get exactly the same settings.

Port forwarding and opening a port on a firewall are not the same thing.

The app you need to configure on the second machine is the app that will be using the ports (the game or torrent client or whatever). You need to tell it to use a different set of ports that don't conflict with the first set. Otherwise, don't configure the port forwarding on the router (router -- not modem).

Than I guess I'm stuck, there's no way to configure ports for the game I'm playing client side. Thanks for clearing this up for me, at least I now understand better what the problem is.

The good news is, when I forwarded every single port the game uses (not only the most typical ones they recommend having open) on the gateway computer, I no longer get disconnects and latency seems acceptable too, even though the ports are still closed on the second machine. And I'm still using a hub. So perhaps in some cases it could work as a solution for people who get disconnects using Yahoo (common problem from what I've heard).

Thanks for looking into it guys, it helped a lot.
