    Default University of New England

Has anyone heard of it? More importantly, has anyone got a degree from them? I am partularly interested in the online MA in applied linguistics. Please share your experiences.
    Thank you.

My father graduated from there in 2000 with his MBA in Project Management. He says it was a fantastic university and as far as I know has a great reputation in Australia.

I am going to enrol there next year to study a science degree as it has been recommended by many specialists in the field I am interested in.

I looked at it very seriously last year. The program looks excellent , ask them for a brochure. I know of a few people who got their degrees from UNE. I ended up studying with USQ (a toss up between the two) which I am also happy with, nearly half done.

Gordon, you may know my father...after his MBA he started his Phd at USQ, a good university with excellent reputation in Asia.

Gordon, what made you choose USQ over UNE? Anything in particular?

I thought the courses seemed more interesting at USQ.
USQ has a trimester system rather than 2 semesters. This gives you a little more flexibilty in the amount of classes you want to study and enables you to finish sooner.
I found the program coordinator (Bronwen) at USQ to be extremely helpful and still do. She makes the place run.
The tuition was about the same, quite affordable really (approx. $9,000 AUS) for either of the schools.
Still it wasn't an easy choice, they are both good schools. In fact, I looked closely at over 18 masters programs in TEFL/Linguistics/Education around the world.

Is your dad a teacher or student? If he works on the applied linguistics program at USQ, I just might.

    Default Online...yes, on-campus...no

UNE is a well-respected university and its online courses are great. But if you're going to study on-campus you might want to think again! If you're looking for night-life and excitement for your non-academic hours, UNE is not the place to go!
(It's in my hometown so I'm pretty qualified to comment!)

I know someone who is doing a PhD there at the moment.

PM and I will put you in touch.
I'd be a hypocrite if I were being an a$$hole to people who weren't a$$holes first. I'm not.

I finished the online MA in Applied Linguistics through this uni in 2005. The biggest attraction at first was that it could be done in a year. I found that some of the subjects were very well organized and content systematically structured, but others were very ordinary. I believe that things have greatly improved since then with an addition of new subjects and the option of majoring in TESOL. Since I studied linguistics in my BA I honestly felt that the course content was a bit easy for an MA, but it seems to be on par with similar programs internationally.
