Thread: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Unhappy Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I get this message all the time recently.

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

It happened to me a while back (in a different location, different wireless connection) but not this bad, not this often. When I click 'Diagnose Connection Problems', it comes up with no problem, just tells me to refresh the page, etc. That rarely works. I'm sure it must be a setting on my computer.

Not sure what info about my computer, connection, or settings is necessary for anyone to offer advice, so tell me what you need to know.

Any help would be gratefully received.

In all honesty, you should choose any other browser. Internet explorer regularly comes out in the bottom of tests against the other major browsers in speed, compatibility, and features. The other major browsers are Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Any of those are better than IE.

Speaking as a web developer, we usually build sites to work in any of the other browsers (they all render sites the same way), then *fix* them for IE.

Personally, I like Opera. It's fast and clean. Chrome is really nice too, though it's a google product, so they are probably indexing your life. Both are lightning fast, and your pages will load significantly faster. On top of that, all the other browsers support more features than IE, so you will find that some pages look nicer, as developers take the effort to add extra features for the browsers that suppport them (which is any browser that is not IE).

It's taken me since I posted this thread until now to get back.
I don't even know if I can post this.
I tried to respond earlier, after I installed Opera, but got this message when I clicked on 'Preview Post':
The file(s) uploaded were too large to process.

Then, when I clicked the back arrow, and tried to submit my post again, in response to your post, I got this message from Opera:

    Connection closed by remote server

You tried to access the address http://forum.gaijinpot.com/newreply....treply&t=92230, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.
Make sure your Internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working.
Check that the setup of any Internet security software is correct and does not interfere with ordinary web browsing.
If you are behind a firewall on a Local Area Network and think this may be causing problems, talk to your systems administrator.
Try pressing the F12 key on your keyboard and disabling proxy servers, unless you know that you are required to use a proxy to connect to the Internet. Reload the page.
which is pretty much the same problem I was having on IE.

There must be a setting on my computer that needs to be changed.
    This is so frustrating!

Sounds like a dodgy connection. I think the browser issue may be a red herring, although the IE diagnosis tool is usually useless and often says it can't find the problem!

Are you using a fixed-line broadband connection with a wireless router? If so, have you tried connecting a LAN cable directly to your PC from the telephone line? If this works well, then it may mean the problem is with your wireless connection. Could be a weak signal or something affecting the signal (strange things like metal water pipes and microwave ovens are said to disrupt the signal). You could try repositioning your router.

It could be a hardware issue with your PC wireless adaptor. You could test to see if anyone else can connect with their equipment. Or... does your PC work anywhere else (if it's a lap-top, can you connect well at a friend's house, for example - or one of the rare places which has wi-fi)?

Try switching everything off (PC, router - everything), waiting five minutes then powering back up again, starting with the router.

Another possibility - is your connection secure (i.e. have you got it protected with a Key)? If not, someone else could be using it and reducing your bandwith.

If it's still a problem even with the direct LAN cable connection, then this suggests that the problem is with the incoming broadband line ltself, or the router - over to your ISP in this case.

Just some thoughts. I'm no expert, but have had a few problems in the past - and sometimes some of the above fixed them.

If it's a today only thing, it could also just be the typhoon.

    Hi thanks for your responses

no it's been happening for the last few days (3 or 4) but today has been especially bad

and with my laptop in a completely different location, different wireless connection, I sometimes had the same problem, but it usually resolved itself. Sometimes I'd just get frustrated and abandon the computer for a while - 15 min or an hour - and when I used it again, it worked fine. Sometimes there was no issue for weeks. However, no other computers at that location had the same problem -- they had no problem at all like I described.

Now, at a different location, the problem has begun again. I'll try to figure out the answers to what kansai lurker has posted.

on Sunday it seemed better, Monday the same problems, I could barely stay logged on for more than a few minutes at a time and the computer almost went out the window.

Tues & Wed was away on a trip and I got back today to find it working just fine! wtf?!?
been using it for the last several hours with no issues at all
    anyway, thanks for your suggestions.
The gremlin seems to be gone and I'm planning to stay with opera.
    Brilliant suggestion, thanks
