Default Going to Asahikawa next week

    What do I do?

I have a free ticket there from Sapporo which is the only reason i'm going. I will probably just get off the train, wander around and then go back.

I'll likely be going by myself so is there any good bars or something where I can meet strangers?

Wouldn't all people you meet in a new town qualify as strangers?

There is a zoo, and there are some mountains.

    Default Asahikawa

There is a great sake kura called Takasago only a 15 minute walk from the JR station. They have a tasting bar there to sample and purchase their sake. The ladies at the tasting bar are always happy and surprised to see gaijin walk through the doors.

your kind of wit and charm would be wasted on the locals. you should just stay home and bask in your own splendor..... and take another pill.
... and thanks to you well_bicyclically, you helped me a lot.

Get out of the centre of Asahikawa as quickly as possible. I once had to change buses there and the city centre had a number of loudspeakers dotted around blaring out announcements incredibly loudly. It did my head in and it made Asahikawa the most unpleasant city centre I've experienced in Japan. Even the cucashopgirl hated it, and she's had a lifetime of noisy Japanese neighbourhoods.

If you have time, head down to Biei - much nicer there!
