The data, says the CWA, is in in stark contrast to broadband speeds available in other countries. The organization compared its own survey data to numbers provided by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation's "Assessing Broadband in America" (PDF) report, which showed that countries such as Japan and even our closest neighbor of Canada have significantly higher broadband download speeds—61Mbps and 7.6Mbps, respectively.
from this article: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...s-1-9mbps.html does anyone get 7.6Mbps average... I logged in 2.7 today at www.speednet.com with Hikari OCN, but I don't know anyone with speeds over 4Mbps is this speed test accurate, the data was being sent from yokohama to osaka (my house) where do they get this 100Mbps best effort figure? I'd like to know what is the average speed for users on GP

9.86 Mbps with J-Com cable in Tokyo
Using this site: http://speedtest.goo.ne.jp/ On torrents I usually max out at 1.1 down and 230 up

I got 41.56 mbps download and 19.4 mbps upload. OCN with Hirakiri on that test, but I am almost the only one in my apartment building using Hikari, most of my neighbors are either using Jcom or Yahoo BB.
Using other tests sites I do not get half as much. OSHO, where do they get this 100Mbps best effort figure? 100Mbps is the maximum the fiber cable handles, best effort meaning if you were the only person using it you would get 100Mbps always. However, when they connect your house or apartment, they also connect your neighbors to the same cable if they have signed up for the service and as more people sign on the "best effort" drops. until you are lucky if you can get 3.0 or so.

I tested again using; http://www.speedtest.net/ - which you can use to test with world wide servers and these are the results I got:
London N.Y download-3583Kb/s download- 4361Kb/s up- 555Kb/s up- 222Kb/s Sydney Dallas, Tx. download - 7439Kb/s download - 6032Kb/s up - 696Kb/s up - 1671Kb/s The site that ChrisElliot2000 posted only test for Japan and therefore it is going to be high. Hope you are getting a better understanding of this stuff. I clicked on the site you posted but could not test out of there. ![]()

thanks for checking that
there must be alot of hikari subscribers in my building today my reading was 25472 download 5627 upload from Speedtest.net 12.38Mbps at goo speed test...this is definitely not right, maybe I didn't enter the correct information in their pull down box. I wonder could there be some reason my speed test results are so low, just doesn't add up my downloads are lightning fast, I guess thats all that matters anyway, when I can download a 5GB file in 3 hours who gives a flip right?

Gentlemen,
May I sugest that everyone test to the same server For example everyone tests using the server in Osaka and all the test are done on speednet. Testing to the worls lets say everyone uses NY, London and Berlin. That should gives an idea for everyone's lines. Will all of us have the saame results, and also lets say we all test around the same time like 5;00 PM or 8;00 pm? Let see what the results are- they will not be the same I believe. ![]()

Wow, you guys have some **** connections! I've been averaging better than 50Mbps downloads for years now ... Although my best speeds have been since I upgraded to Leopard in the fall - improved network stack, whatever - my speeds are better with Leopard than they were with Tiger, and light years ahead of what they were with WinXP.
![]() Upload speed isn't too hot, but I don't really care about that - stopped using torrents a couple years ago in favor of usenet, and haven't looked back since. Even with my crappy connection to the States (major bottlenecks crossing the Pacific sometimes) I still pull down about 8Mbps when downloading DVD-Rs, which means I can grab any movie in less than 10 minutes. All in all, can't complain! |

well atleast someone is getting the "average"
7.6Mbps....meanwhile the average on GP seems to fall around 30,000Kbps... alright so if your looking to get the top speed in Japan consult with Mavis, i think m would be entitled to some finders fee...ha ha or did you let the cat out of the bag

mavis where are you at? Looking at the results you tested using a server in Tokyo, so you are not in Tokyo. But damm good speed. What client are you using if you are not doing torrents and don't you have to pay to usenet?

I first signed up to a usenet archive site about three years ago when I realized that expecting to get the 'really good stuff' for free was a dorm-room mentality.
AFAIK anyone on hikari fiber can get 12 Mb/s downloading from a site such as usenetserver.com - and I'm way out in the sticks. I pay $40/quarter. I still hit the BT sites - but mainly to get the file names to search for them on usenet. -- |

For some reason I get better results with Yokohama server than Tokyo, and I'm in Chiba....
I'm sure I used to get much faster when first connected to Bflets, but at one time slowed right down to 5Mb, that was a router issue which improved when I reflashed the firmware. Maybe a new router would improve speeds again?!? SteadyRM, speedtest.net doesn't show Osaka server for me... Edit: Just found this news story which may explain a few things. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national...03TDY01302.htm ![]() Last edited by Taffy : 2008-03-05 at 11:14 AM. |

And yes, usenet is a paid service. I use Giganews' Platinum plan, it costs about $30USD /month and it's worth every penny. Giganews has something like 200 day retention, which means I can find literally ANYTHING that has been released within the past 6-7 months. Scene releases, non-scene - it's all there. Apps, games, music, porn, movies - I can find anything I'm looking for, download it and extract it in less than ten minutes. In fact, it's usually much faster than that. I was looking for Office 2008 the other day - it took me less than three minutes from search to install. Good stuff. ![]() |

![]() 50,044 download speed based on Tokyo cone strangely enough Yokohama reads only 27,000 so this speed test can't be reliable. anyways, when you can download 2 hours media in less than 30 minutes...thats about a round trip ride to Tsutaya

![]() As much as I have to shell out for Hikari Fiber you'd think that'd pay for bragging rights to the fastest connection speed desho? How close is this to what they actually advertise too? Maybe we could post our monthly costs too? Sadly I'm afraid NTT B-Flets would "win" in this category as well. Would you believe 6,720 yen a freakin' month? Any evidence that ISPs in Japan are throttling bandwidth to punish those utilizing torrents? Recent news story claims Japan ISPs may start terminating service to those users thought to be sharing copyrighted material!?? |

![]() You're complaining about 7,000Y/month? Hell, my grandparents have been paying close to that for years now, for 256K DSL ... You should be grateful that you've got a 100Mbit up/down hikari line for less than $100/month - that's unheard of in most parts of the world. |

Come to think of it maybe you're right. I guess I've been in Japan so long that some things I have started to take for granted. Actually I didn't realize that people pay that much in the States for such lame connections. I think it depends greatly on their location, right?
My history of ISPs in Japan has been an evolving thing as I moved around. First there was Nifty Serve. Then I went to So-Net, then Asahi-Net, then for a long time I had my connection via my local Cable TV provider and finally a couple of years back I switched to Hikari Fiber with NTT. Sometimes I feel like the guy in this picture, "well, life has been fun so far, now what?" Last edited by 29man : 2008-03-26 at 09:22 AM. |

Been quite awhile since anyone posted here. But I am curious, I am no wizard with internet speeds but maybe someone can help me out...
I was getting 59mbps at my old apartment on Wi-Fi B-Flets Buffalo. At my new place I just set up OCN. I am getting 10mbps now. Is this common cus it seems rock slow? I use a Dell Notebook bought new less than a year ago from the U.S. Never had problems before. I use it for gaming online and sometimes torrents. I currently log on to a game and try to watch say, veoh.com or youtube. And the game runs like I threw it off a truck, and a 2min video of a cat jumping outta bushes and attacking some baby takes like 15min to fully stream and play. Any suggestions? I thought about calling OCN, but I dont really wanna b*tch if 10mbps is the best I can get. Neither do I wanna complain and then have them smack me with 1mbps... Just seems wrong that in the states on 256kbps I could run games and watch vids no problem, but here in Tokyo/Chiba area I am getting dial-up connections that say 10mbps. edit: oh yeah I also tried speedtest.net tokyo, and got DL/693 and UL/2987. Seems like those numbers should be switched around... I really dont get it. I tried 2 min later and got DL/856 and UL/2698 tried the next morning and got this: ![]() Last edited by itsokonneptune : 2008-07-11 at 12:36 PM. |

But to be honest idk how to even go about doing that ><. Hopefully it is between the router and the pc like you think, I will post again. Thanks! |

Cool, glad things are working! I have found that most of the time sales clerks and supposed to be Japanese tech guys do not know squat, however, if they are females then more than likely they know their stuff. Strange isn't it?
