  • French broadcaster apologizes to Japan over Fukushima gag

    The Japanese are really touchy.

    National Oct. 17, 2012 - 07:01AM JST ( 72 )

Japan's goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima stops the ball during the friendly football match France vs Japan, on October 12 AFP PARIS \

The head of France 2 television apologized on Tuesday to Japan after a presenterfs gag showed the Japanese national soccer teamfs goalkeeper with four arms and linking that to the gFukushima effect.h
After Eiji Kawashima helped Japan to a 1-0 victory over France in a friendly last week, a variety program screened by France 2 showed a mock-up of the keeper with four arms, apparently in praise for him having kept a clean sheet.
But host Laurent Ruquier quipped that the extra limbs were due to gthe Fukushima effect,h a reference to the radiation leaks that spewed from the tsunami-crippled nuclear power station in March 2011.

The diplomats and others in France apparently are "touchy." But normal people here had no idea about this until the media announced it. Consider what would have happened if this self important "humorist" had made some similarly really dumba.ss comment about muslims/islam or, say, anything Jewish. And the Chinese would, of course, be destroying French businesses by now. Canadians, Germans, Brits and Americans would be dismissive -- "He's only French so whaddya expect?"

While we're on the topic of inappropriate outrage, did you notice that a chorus of politicians expressed their extreme displeasure over an (alleged) rape committed by an American solidier? Shouldn't they be expressing almost daily outrage, then, over the tragic "regular rapes" by Japanese men against Japanese women?

Exactly! And considering the U.S. is the only thing that stands between J-land and the angry Chinese horde, I think the U.S. military should get a few rape "freebies" each year.

Yes, well the problem is when you get 50 guys who all think they should be the ones getting the "freebie".

"No, no, no, officer. This rape was a freebie. Yep. Thanks. Have a good evening, sir."

          Time + Tragedy = Comedy
          Too soon perhaps ?

I think it's quite funny and I'm not a big fan of the French.
Always liked Kevin Kline's American in " A Fish Called Wanda "

            From the article:

The incident prompted an official complaint from Tokyo, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura describing it as ginappropriateh and saying it ghurt the feelings of survivors and hampers efforts toward reconstructionh.

Crap! It was funny, I cannot wait to show my Japanese father-in-law (from Fukushima prefecture), who'll laugh out loud. Japan Inc. have got absolutely no sense of humour when someone makes a joke about them, however mild or funny.

Ruquier is a pro of this kind of jokes. About anything (religions included). His team too. And we're used to it, so we aren't touchy about his jokes which, sometimes, go to far indeed.
