  • Australian license getting an International driving permit

I am asking for my Australian friend. He is coming here again and wnats to drive a 2 ton truck. The truck will be rented by a Japanese national, my friend will just be an additional driver. He has asked the driving center for Australia if his driving permit will allow him to drive a two ton truck in Japan and they said 'check the net' useful I know! After checking the net, I or he cannot find anything about it. Does anyone out there know what the restrictions are on an international license?

    To make it super clear.

He is Australian, 24, full Australian driving license with no penaltys.
Can he drive a rented two ton truck in Japan with an International license.

    Thank you

checked the web, you can use an IDP if you have a full drivers licence. You can drive a truck up to 5 tons on a regular licence and in Japan a truck between 5-11 tons you need a Medium licence (chugata menkyo). Anything over that like a bus you need a HT licence.

The issue is not what is specified Japan or the license from your "home" country, but the 3500 kg limit stated in the IDP (see wiki page). This happens to be the limit in the UK (and other Euro countries?). A normal US license from most states allows you to drive a truck that weighs up to 26,000 lbs (13 short tons).
